Riding Lessons at Gentle Hill Farm
A young student learning to post the trot on Butterscotch
Cody and Odyssey
You can learn how to ride and take care of horses at Gentle Hill Farm without owning a horse of your own.
We have more than a dozen school horses (and ponies) of different personalities for you to learn on. Our school horses are experienced veterans and permanent residents. Horses that come to work for us stay with us for the rest of their lives. We match students to appropriate horses, increasing the challenge as students gain more skills and experience.
We offer riding lessons for adults and for children as young as 6 years old. Children as young as 4 years old are welcome at Pony Parties.
Grooming and saddling are included in all riding lessons, because horsemanship is about more than just riding. We supervise and assist with these activities as needed. Students ride for about an hour, so total barn time for each lesson is about 2 hours.
We require and happily supply ASTM/SEI-approved riding helmets for our students' use. We also require long pants and sturdy shoes or boots with a small heel.
For horse owners
Haul-in lessons on your horse are welcome. We have a new 20-by-60-meter standard dressage arena with letters.
Off-farm dressage lessons (including Western dressage) on your own horse can be arranged to fit your schedule, as long as you have a safe place to ride.
Helmet use is required for all lessons.
